Compromise found on size of Abberley playground „„ By Julia Evans RESIDENTS HAVE stopped a major upgrade of playground equipment at their local park because they said it would take up too much green space. The upgrades were set to go ahead in Abberley Park in March and equipment was going utilise more than double the space it previously had taken. However, after a meeting on February 16, new plans have been drafted. The Friends of Abberley Park group, the FendaltonWaimairi-Harewood Community Board and city council staff met to significantly reduce the space the initial upgrade would have taken. City councillor and board member Aaron Keown attended the meeting and he said he was confident the new proposal found a compromise both parties could be happy with. The space taken up by play equipment is less than it was and the equipment has been moved so it is no longer taking space away from the park’s east lawn. Cr Keown said he had received emails from several members of the group who were content with the new proposed plans. •Turn to page 5

In Brief TRAFFIC CONCERN A Harewood residents’ group has expressed concern over the Kilmuir Lane/Harewood Rd intersection. The Kilmuir Residents’ Group said motorists turning right out of the lane have reduced visibility because of cars parked on Harewood Rd. The major issue is when sport is being played at nearby Nunweek Park. Residents said they have all experienced at least one near miss at the junction. The group has submitted a letter to the Fendalton-Waimairi-Harewood Community Board asking for no-stopping restrictions or some other safety measure to be installed. UPGRADE FINISHED

Work on the intersection where Westminster and Courtenay Sts meet Roosevelt Ave has almost finished. The roundabout has been removed and turned into a staggered T-intersection with a speed bump, raised intersection platform and pedestrian refuge island. The road has been narrowed and footpaths widened to reduce the crossing distance for pedestrians and encourage slower driving in the area, which has been reinforced by the speed bump. St Albans School pupils regularly use the crossing.

Veterinary practice

Miracles do happen…. Misty is a 14 year old Rough Coated Collie ( lassie dog) lovingly owned by my parents. She’s never been a hugely energetic dog but has the gentlest, sweetest nature. She has had the odd health issue and is currently taking ongoing medication for arthritis of multiple joints. She’s not a complainer though and will still slowly walk around my parents farm, her favourite pastime being flushing out rabbits and doing cattle work with my dad. Shes always enjoyed a visit from Lola. Very sadly late last year, Misty was accidentally run over. My devastated parents flew to the clinic where Steve and our nurses immediately took charge. Luckily they live very close. She was remarkably alive and seemed in minimal shock, not like my poor mum and dad. Our nurses were fabulous – it was like triage in a hospital ER room. Whilst she was checked over for shock,

bleeding and fractures, the nurses were placing an IV line in her, were pulling bloods to check her internal organs and organizing shock and pain medications. I had to consult as it was a usual busy Saturday clinic. I can tell you its very hard to carry on as normal, when a dog you know and love is at risk of dying and I couldn’t be there to support my mum and dad. I’m very thankful to my husband Steve for arriving when he did and taking full control of the situation. Within 30 minutes of arriving Misty actually looked improved. She wasn’t wanting to stand, but her vital organs were all confirmed fine from her blood tests and her heart and lungs sounded fine. She was on IV fluids and we wanted to give her a little time on fluids before we had to sedate and xray her abdomen, chest and bones. She was an incredible little patient, never whimpering nor complaining once. Miraculously Misty had broken no bones – I was worried her pelvis or worse her lower lumbar spine could have fractured. Misty was discharged later that night into my parents care on a variety of medications to ensure she was pain

free and comfortable. She certainly wasn’t out of the woods but was better than any of us could have believed. She could walk, just, and was eating and had urinated. Misty continued to improve slowly over the coming days becoming stronger and more mobile but my dad had noticed what looked like crusty scabs under her dense coat. We discovered many of these blackened areas and after shaving her back end it became obvious that a large area of her skin was “dying”, due to vascular ( blood vessel) damage suffered at the time of the accident. Over the next 4 months a massive effort was undertaken by my mum and dad and Misty herself, to help heal these very extensive skin wounds, comparable to what you would see in burns victims. The area of skin that sloughed off initially was about 30cm by 20cm. The wound has had to be cleaned, kept moist and protected by bandaging for the past 4 months. She was monitored 24/7 and kept inside a lot to protect the bandages from slipping. Keeping flies away was also a difficult task. She has been so brave allowing us all to clean and dress it for her but finally the healing is nearly complete. There were times when my mum wasn’t sure we were getting anywhere and whether we were doing the right thing by her. She is an elderly dog and her ongoing care required by my parents was huge. But that aside, I could see Misty wanted to push through and keep going – she wasn’t ready to depart this world. Plus she was so dearly loved by my parents. It also helped that my mum was a registered nurse so could easily cope with large wounds and their care. Give an animal time, have patience and faith and show lots of love and miracles can happen. Every day I thank the higher powers that I am the one chosen to care for all the animals. -Dr Michele McMaster

City councillor Phil Clearwater has his say on the use of petrol tax to help fix the city’s roads and the importance of diversity in the community Many streets and roads in Christchurch still require a lot more work to bring them up to standard. I have always had the view that central Government should be returning some of the tax-take on petrol to help fix Christchurch’s streets. I have never said or supported any proposal to have any additional tax on petrol to help pay for Christchurch’s earthquake recovery. Christchurch people have enough burdens already and I would not support this. I have said that the city has a special case for further Government funding from some of the petrol tax Government already collects.

Fixing our streets and infrastructure will take more time than people envisaged, but we need to complete this as soon as it is feasible, and some of the present petrol tax could be used to help achieve this. On Waitangi Day at Tuahiwi Marae, our mayor led a citizenship ceremony welcoming new citizens from 17 countries. Recently, the city council signed off our multi-cultural strategy, which aims for Christchurch to be inclusive of our new migrants. Every New Zealand citizen must feel they can call our country their home and feel they belong here. Particularly to help with the rebuild, we have had

a large increase in the number of migrants and a significant number live in the suburbs of south Christchurch. The world is divided as to how we treat new migrants, but I believe we must find practical ways to make them feel welcome, as Christchurch needs their skills and they are an important part of our communities. Also, we have to remember that, at some stage in our history, all of our forebears immigrated to New Zealand from overseas. Six years after the earthquakes, Christchurch is really coming alive again and people from many nations will help our city thrive. Here’s to everyone having a great year in Christchurch.

Young musician already a master By Bridget Rutherford ALEXANDRA Watson doesn’t have a favourite instrument to play. She plays five – and she also sings. But the violin will be her instrument of choice at the National Schools’ Symphony Orchestra of Great Britain in July. The 15-year-old St Margaret’s College student will be the only young musician to perform from outside the United Kingdom. “It’s definitely a talking point,” she said. It will be the sixth year she has taken part in the week-long camp of rehearsals and performances for young musicians aged between nine and 19. She auditioned to join at the age of 10 while living in Eastbourne, West Sussex, and has been invited back every year since. She has moved her way up to the senior orchestra, which is for musicians grade eight or above. The orchestra will be conducted by Richard Dickins, director of music at London’s Imperial College – where Alexandra hopes to study one day. “When I leave school I want to study physics and music.”

TALENTED: Alexandra Watson is off to the UK in July to take part in the National Schools’ Symphony Orchestra of Great Britain. PHOTO: MARTIN HUNTER

Alexandra started singing and playing the violin when she was two. Since then, she has also taken up the piano, flute, chello and harp – all of which she has reached or is about to reach grade eight in. “I just kept picking them up.” She is also part of a number of choirs and, in her school breaks, studies song writing and theory

at Canterbury University. Alexandra has also been selected for a place in the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra Mentoring Programme with associate concertmaster Donald Armstrong. Music is not her only passion. She also wants to work at NASA. She has attended two space camps in Huntsville, Alabama, and loved them.

Alexandra and her parents will head to the UK in July for the orchestra camp at Malvern College and will visit her grandmother during their stay. She said every time she had attended, she had learnt a lot. “It’s the experience of being in such a high-quality orchestra, even though it’s secondary students, everyone is of a high level of playing.”

Playground compromise found •From page 1 Friends of Abberley Park group members Maggie Andrews and Patricia Wallace both said the loss of green space didn’t take the versatility of the whole park into consideration. Mrs Wallace said the new proposal is not ideal but she thinks it is as good as they’re going to get. There are some things the group would like more clarification on such as whether the playground will extend past the central park bench. She said it has become hard to get explanations around the finer points of the proposal. Project manager Steven Gray said the new proposal will be put towards the community board before it is finalised. At this stage construction is still set to begin in March. Leaflets were delivered to 1300 residents before city council staff planned the first proposal but Miss Andrews said it was not made clear that this was not a simple upgrade of existing playground equipment but a $150,000 upgrade and extension.

Dairy struggles with roadworks By Julia Evans A ST Albans business made $40 a day while cycleway upgrades removed parking from outside the shop. Rutland St Dairy owner Jackson Zhuang said he made only 20 per cent of his usual takings over several days in February. Mr Zhuang said the $40 daily take would not cover wages, rent, insurance, rates, orders for the shop or the power bill, let alone the mortgage on his home and supporting his family. A post on Facebook from Mr Zhuang’s regular customers was shared more than 100 times and generated a boost in customers over the weekend. He said his takings were up for a few days and he was happy with the way the community rallied to support local businesses. The roadworks had moved from directly outside the shop, but Mr Zhuang said the afternoons were still very quiet. “Before 3pm is fine, but after three we are very quiet and after three is usually our main selling time,” he said. The Papanui Parallel cycleway upgrades began outside the shop three weeks ago as part of the city council’s wider cycleway

$40 a DAY: The Rutland St Dairy has only made 20 per cent of its usual takings over several days due to work on upgrading the Papanui Parallel cycleway.

programme and will continue until May. The cycleway will cut parking to one side of Rutland St, but after local businesses complained to the city council, its has tried to limit their losses.

Mr Zhuang said the city council should be spending the money on harder hit areas of Christchurch like New Brighton or the central city. “I hope the cycleway improves business when it’s finished, but

it’s not helping the whole community now.” Mr Zhuang said he wants things to return to normal so he can carry on doing the best by his customers and community. He said before the roadworks began, Christchurch Central MP Nicky Wagner came into the shop and assured him work would be completed as quickly as possible. Neighbouring store, Cocoa Gifts, has also seen a drop in walk-in customers since the work began. Cocoa Gifts owner Liz van Montfort said, while it has been very disruptive to business, she has been supported by a very loyal community. Papanui-Innes Community Board chairwoman Ali Jones said she would look into how many people are working on the cycleway upgrade so they can get it finished as soon as possible. “It seems underdone in terms of workers, but I’m no expert,” she said. The board has been in contact with Fulton Hogan which is undertaking the work. It has been liaising with business owners regularly about the effects of the cycleway upgrade work.

Siblings dominate surf champs SPORTS By Julia Evans A YOUNG brother and sister are taking the surf life saving scene by storm. At the Southern Region Junior Championships, Samantha Lascelles, 10, and brother Alexander, 7, were both crowned overall champions in their age groups. Between them, they won 11 medals at the recent competition on Warrington Beach, near Dunedin. Selwyn House student Samantha received six of the medals, and Alexander, who is a pupil at Elmwood Normal School, won five. Samantha has been named the junior champion every year since she began competing three years ago. The siblings compete and train with the Sumner Surf Life Saving Club, which came second in the overall club rankings, losing the top spot to Dunedin’s St Clair. Surf Life Saving Christchurch manager Henry Lawson said it’s great to see juniors excelling and the next generation of life guards coming through. Father Richard Lascelles said

the siblings first began training up on Onemana Beach in the Coromandel when they were five and three respectively. Onemana is a dangerous swimming beach and the surf club there ran an excellent fitness and training programme, which the kids loved, he said. While it began as something they only did on holiday, when Samantha began winning, they decided she was good enough to enter at home. Mr Lascelles said the secret to their success was not living and breathing life saving – the pair are always active and always doing something different. “They’re usually doing something every day, but they train in a variety of sports, they don’t do 10 sessions on the same thing,” he said. They swim, run, play cricket, do athletics and cross country, as well as surf life saving in the summer, he said. “They love it. It’s good fun.” Samantha and Alexander hope to add more medals to their collection at the surf life saving Canterbury Junior Championships.

WINNERS: Samantha Lascelles (above) took home six medals at the Southern Region Junior Championship and her brother, Alexander, won five medals.

New Brighton Beach warms up ahead of nationals By Gordon Findlater THE CITY’S top surf life saving clubs were pipped by St Clair at the weekend’s Southern Regional Championships in New Brighton. The venue for next month’s New Zealand Surf Life Saving Championships hosted more than 260 athletes in 20 events over four different age groups. Extra hype surrounded the event with the champs acting as a prelude to the nationals, which will be held at New Brighton on March 16 to 19. “It was great to see the number of clubs that were involved this year. The weather on Saturday

was great, and Sunday definitely added another challenge, but the on-water conditions were still really good for racing,” said Henry Lawson, southern region life saving and education manager. South Brighton were the best of the local clubs. However, they were unable to retain their title, finishing second to St Clair who dominated the team points. Points (top 10) St Clair 218, 1; South Brighton 140.50, 2; Brighton 73.50, 3; Spencer Park 56, 4; Taylors Mistake 55,5; Sumner 54, 6; Waimairi 52, 7; Mt Maunganui 23, 8; St Kilda 17, 9; Waikuku Beach 14, 10.

CHAMP: Alex Fort from South Brighton was part of the winning crew in the open men’s board relay.

Another Boyle on the horizon By Gordon Findlater THE BOYLE name is synonymous with cricket in Canterbury – now Matt Boyle looks set to be the latest cab off the rank after a blistering summer to date. Boyle, 14, was key with the bat, helping St Bede’s College qualify for the national finals of the junior secondary school boys’ competition. He comes from Jack Boyle a talented cricketing family. His father Justin was a prominent firstclass cricketer for Canterbury in the 1980s. His uncle David also played for Canterbury Justin in the 1980s and Boyle 1990s, while his older brother Jack made his first-class debut for Canterbury last year and has represented the

province at least half a dozen times. Now the year 10 student top scored with 65 as St Bede’s defeated Christchurch Boys’ High School by three wickets in the regional final last week. They will now head to the national tournament in Palmerston North next month. Boyle recently picked up the year 9 batting award at the Christchurch Metro Cricket youth awards after scoring 613 runs at an average of 153 in his first year at high school. He has since earned a spot in the St Bede’s first XI and recently scored his first century for the team. His maiden first XI century came in the school’s traditional game against Sacred Heart College in Auckland. He went in to bat with the score at 30/5 and went on to score 110 not out. He has a way to go to catch a school record held by older brother, Jack, who scored a record 10 first XI centuries during his time at St Bede’s. However,

Jack’s confident his younger brother can go on to eclipse him. “He’s still got four years ahead of him; I definitely didn’t score any as a year 10. I’d imagine he will go on to pass that before he finishes,” said Jack. Their father Justin, who is rector at St Bede’s, is the first XI batting coach and believes Matt Boyle can carry on the family tradition of playing first-class cricket. “Jack’s first century was at the beginning of year 12, so as long as Matt keeps his feet on the ground he could do it,” said Justin. While he may have plenty of time to chase down his brother’s record, Boyle and the St Bede’s junior team will have their eyes set on a national title when the junior secondary school boys’ competition tournament begins on March 27. PROMISING: Matt Boyle received a batting award at this month’s Christchurch Metro Cricket youth awards.

CGHS row to under-19 title

NEW

NATIONALS: The top Christchurch Girls’ High School coxed four team won the under-19 title at the New Zealand Rowing Championships in Twizel. Laura Pinnell, Grace Loveridge, Emily Nicholson-Sell, Georgia Sevier and Georgia Scott (coxswain) won their heat and earned the top qualifying time going into the final. In the big race, CGHS pushed off the starting blocks in first position with Columba College from Dunedin close behind the whole race. They held out Columba, ultimately winning the final by just one second. The crew went on to finish third at the weekend’s Canterbury junior regatta at Ashburton’s Lake Hood. They finished behind St Margaret’s College and Rangi Ruru Girls’ School. The crew will now turn their attention to the South Island secondary on March 11a.m. to 12. New after-hours service

provides flexibility for patients A new after-hours medical service has been launched in Christchurch with the aim of providing a better and more readily accessible service for patients outside normal medical centre hours. Dr Martin Seers, a GP at the Selwyn Medical Centre in Selwyn Street, says a group of GPs are testing this new model for out-of-hours medical service that enables people to book a specific time to see a doctor, rather than having to sit in an afterhours waiting room. He says anyone seeking medical assistance after hours should first call their own GP’s phone number, from where they will be connected to the Home Care Medical line. As with the Health Line phone service, a nurse will ask a set of questions to ascertain whether the person needs to see a doctor, and if not the nurse will advise on how the person can take care of themself at home. Should they need to see a doctor they then go online to the website AfterhoursGP. co.nz, answer a few simple questions, then book an appointment at a time that suits. “This a totally new model and it’s not available anywhere else in Canterbury,” Dr Seers says. “It saves people money by providing selfcare advice for those who don’t need to see a GP, and for those who do, it doesn’t waste

their time.” The service is currently run out of Selwyn Street Medical Centre, which is conveniently located just off Brougham St, but the service is set up to be venue agnostic, so patients in future could be seen in any of the medical centres involved in the service, Dr Seers says. A key point of difference from the traditional after-hours surgery system is that it gives people the flexibility of choosing their appointment time. “It’s much more comfortable for people to wait at home until their appointment time, rather than sitting in a waiting room with other unwell people, and not knowing when they will be seen. “Another point of difference is that the service is designed as an ultralow bureaucracy system with minimal overheads. Using the facilities of existing, fully equipped medical centres means it’s free or less expensive,” Dr Seers says. The service is available Monday to Friday from 6pm-11pm and on weekends and public holidays as required. It is free for under-13 year-olds and $73 for most adults, which is cheaper than other afterhours services in Christchurch. For nonNew Zealand residents the cost is $95.

A New Year brings new decisions and choices. 2017 has started with many people choosing to move homes, buy a car or organise another holiday.

We make important choices throughout our life; what schools our children will go to, what food we eat, what friends we have, where to go on holiday, and the values we instil in our children. Two of the biggest choices we have to make are; where we live and when to sell and buy. A crucial component of the process is selecting the right licensed real estate agent to guide you through the mountain of information and industry jargon. An agent can assist in the important task of identifying the right buyer for your house, as well as understanding your unique requirements and make your next dream home a reality. It takes great negotiation and sales skills teamed with effective target marketing to deliver the very best results. Kathryn and Peter can offer you an exceptional real estate experience. Working as a team we collectively together want to achieve the very best results and the best outcome. Give us a call today, we would really like to hear from you.

Client Comments We sold our house in Strowan Road. We were fortunate that we listed with experienced local agents Peter and Kathryn Hampton to perform this task on our behalf. We were very impressed by Peter and Kathryn’s knowledge of the local area. The Marketing campaign which fitted in with our budget suggested by Peter and Kathryn attrached a large number of people to the Open Home viewings. Throughout the three weeks sales period, Peter and Kathryn’s communication and buyer feedback was invaluable and greatly appreciated. Their professional attitude and honesty gave us confidence to trust his decisions. We would have no hesitation in recommending Peter and Kathryn Hampton to anybody looking at selling their house. Brian and Maryanne Many thanks Peter and Kathryn for doing such a great job in selling our house. We appreciated your knowledge of the local market, your ability to listen, your calm demeanours and your straight forward and clear communication (without any annoying jargon!) The selling price was above our expectations and that was down to your hard work and experience. We wouldn’t hesitate to recommend you. Cherry I listed my three bedroomed villa with Peter and Kathryn Hampton, and have been extremely happy with the process and outcome. Their local knowledge and past experience with other properties in the area proved to be invaluable to help convince buyers that ‘this was one of them.’ From the outset, I was determined to find an agent that was realistic with market value, knew their stuff and would not tell me what they thought I wanted to hear. Coupled with a close working relationship, as well as the ever important sale, I have absolutely no hesitation in recommending them. Brent
